Call information

The CIVIS3i program is rooted in the concept of a cross-border environment for research that offers a wide range of possibilities in terms of international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration. CIVIS3i offers a comprehensive training and networking program, integrating interdisciplinarity and intersectorality in research, as well as skills to work on an international environment. CIVIS3i is devoted to increase the career perspectives of fellows, by offering talented researchers an attractive environment for research and by training a future generation of employable, mobile, first-class researchers.

Sixteen 24-month Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded to  researchers in possession of a doctoral degree, from the entire world, in all fields of research.

Candidates may choose to be hosted and develop their research at one of the alliance four recruiting universities (AMU, ULB, SUR, UAM), where their main advisor must be affiliated, and mobility within the whole alliance (the ten universities + non-academic partners) will be facilitated. Candidates are required to included elements of intersectoral mobility and interdisciplinarity in their application, such as a 3-month secondment and short visits in one of the academic or non-academic partners, and a co-supervision at one of the 10 CIVIS Universities

Secondment provisions and co-supervision should be included at the proposal stage if possible; however, if such elements are not fully defined in the proposal, the laureates will be accompanied on these dimensions once selected. Fellows are expected to participate in outreach activities related to their research. The competitive fellowships are designed to further the education and training of the fellows with primary emphasis placed on the individual's research promise, and to boost their future career inside or outside academia. The call is open to all fields of research, organised into the five CIVIS thematic hubs listed below, aligned with major societal challenges. The hubs integrate multiple topics, giving the fellows the freedom to conduct research on a wide range of subjects, for instance:

Candidates must present an ambitious research project that meets the three "I's" of CIVIS3i: International, Interdisciplinary and Intersectoral.

Applications are done via the CIVIS3i Application submission portal, which will be available in September. Candidates are strongly encouraged to check the application and the evaluation guides prior to starting an application procedure. It is also useful to check the submission portal during the preparation of the application.

Communication with potential CIVIS3i advisors prior to submitting an application is compulsory. The best way to obtain more information about ongoing research within the CIVIS3i Alliance is via the database found on the CIVIS3i research inventory (Find an advisor page) of the CIVIS3i website and by visiting the individual Department, Center and Institute web pages listed on the Guide for Applicants (see section How to Identify Advisors).

The application file will include the application form, a research and training proposal, a curriculum vitae, an Ethics Self-Assessment, a copy of the PhD degree or certificate confirming that the PhD is fulfilled prior to the call deadline, or alternatively a career description proving at least 4 years of full-time research experience by the call deadline, including work contracts, employer certificates, etc, and a copy of the passport or identity card.

  • Guide for Applicants

The Guide for Applicants for the fisrt call will help you to prepare your application file. The Guide also provides detailed information about the evaluation and selection procedure, which involves four stages: an eligibility check, a remote expert evaluation, an interview to candidates and a consensus review.

The applicant must identify an advisor within the CIVIS3i Alliance and may obtain an optional letter of acceptance from them (signed by the department/lab director). If the applicant has not yet identified an advisor, they can consult the CIVIS3i Research Inventory "Find an advisor" or visit the individual Department, Center and Institute web pages (see the Guide for applicants PDF).

  • Call evaluation and selection

The Guide for Evaluators describes the evaluation and selection procedure in detail. The Guide for Evaluators for the Second Call is coming soon. Stay tuned!
