Dr. Susanne Abou Ghaida is presenting her work at the BRISMES conference, the UK's largest and most prestigious annual gathering of scholars and practitioners focusing on the Middle East and North Africa (Lancaster, 1-3 July)
Her research explores the methodological insights gained from interviewing fans and original readers of the adventure/espionage series Al-Shayaateen Al-13 [13 Devils], popular among Arab youth in the 1970s and 1980s.
By reflecting on the shared generational experiences of the researcher and the participants - Arabs born in the 1970s and 1980s who experienced different cultural consumption patterns before the rise of satellite television in the 1990s and the Internet in the 2000s - the research erodes the traditional binary between researcher and researched.
Participants take on multiple roles such as fans, scholars, archivists and salesmen, enriching the research dynamic with collegiality, friendship and commercial interactions, creating an innovative methodology.
Dr Susanne Abou Ghaida will also be presenting her research at the Children's History Society Biennial Conference in Newscastle UK (4-6 July).
