We are please to announce our former fellow Anna Delle Foglie will open the new conferences series “Relazioni d’Arte” at Palazzo Chigi Piccolomini alla Postierla.
The upcoming lecture, the first in the 2024–2025 cycle, is titled “Michelino da Besozzo and the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria: New Research on the Artist and His Masterpiece in Painting” and will be delivered by Anna Delle Foglie, researcher at the Université libre de Bruxelles – Département d’enseignement d’Histoire, Arts et Archéologie, on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 5:00 PM.
The lecture, focusing on “Michelino da Besozzo and the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria”, will present findings from the research project titled Michelino da Besozzo and the International Gothic Style by art historian and postdoctoral researcher Anna Delle Foglie (Université libre de Bruxelles), conducted within the framework of the CIVIS3i Program.
Drawing on new discoveries, the talk will offer a reinterpretation of the artwork, one of the most significant examples of panel painting from the so-called "soft style" or International Gothic style in Northern Italy.
The painting, initially listed as a Sienese work in Luigi De Angelis' first printed catalog of the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena in 1816, was later attributed to the Lombard artist.
The lecture will also retrace the career of Michelino da Besozzo, an exceptional painter and illuminator active between 1388 and 1450 at the court of Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti in Pavia, as well as in Lombardy and Veneto.
Additionally, the results of non-invasive diagnostic analyses (ED-XRF and FORS) carried out as part of the research project, in collaboration with Prof. Anna Candida Felici (Laboratory of Non-Destructive Analyses and Archaeometry – LANDA, Sapienza University of Rome), will also be presented.
